Drugstore Haul / Do You Have a Price Point Discrepancy?

I picked up a few drugstore goodies. Firstly, my staple Ardell Fashion Lashes (better than MAC imo) in a demi cut for more a natural-looking false lash look (if at all possible). I also nabbed those two CG eyeshadow quads because they were buy one, get one 50% off. After buying two energy drinks for my boyfriend and I, I left the drugstore with a $20 tab. I remember saying on the way out, "How did I just spend $20 at CVS?"

Which got me thinking... It's strange, I'll drop $20 on one high-end eyeshadow alone at Nordstrom, sometimes more for a single lip gloss at Sephora. But why, when I see an $8 price tag on a lip color at the drugstore can I not suffice a reason to buy it? $8 is too much for me for a L'Oreal lip gloss, when I'll spend $25+ on NARS gloss. Same for eyeshadow. I know I'm spending more for quality, but it still amuses me that $8 to me is a drugstore splurge when anywhere else, it would be a total steal.

What about you... Do you have a price point discrepancy when spending at the drugstore versus a department store/boutique?

I totally understand your "dilemma" with spending that much money on a L'oreal lip gloss. If it's $8-10 I'd honestly rather head other to somewhere like MAC and be able to try it on and know I like it.

I usually only buy "expensive" drugstore products if they're on sale. I try to stick with things under the $5-6 mark too, usually. There are a couple of things that are more pricey, like L'Oreal HIP cream liners, but I felt like those were worth it.

That is interesting! Personally, I have never spent a ton on lip gloss because I rarely wear them anymore, except for photo ops. Eye color and foundation I would be *willing* to spend the most on, but really, I think that 'sale' mentality is what does it. Regardless of quality, I always tend to buy what is a 'good deal'. If I see a shadow for $5 full price I might say "Oh, I don't need that", but the if the same shadow is $10 marked down to $5, I'll likely snatch it up. Perhaps the illusion that it's worth more than I'm paying matters more than anything else. It seems I've gotten over this shopping pattern with clothing, but with accessories/makeup I'm still battling through it!

I totally do that too when it comes to makeup! I almost always buy drugstore makeup when it's on sale, probably because there's always a sale going on. Certain brands never seem to go on sale, like Max Factor and L'oreal HIP, so I rarely buy their products even though it's great. Thing is, I pay retail and more to buy Japanese drugstore brands online and have them shipped to me in LA. Is it because it's so unattainable for me? I know they go on sale in Japan/Taiwan, just like drugstore brands here, but I almost stopped caring about the price. Same thing when it comes to skincare and lotions. I'll plop down $50+ for a bottle of moisturizer from Nars, but unless Olay was on sale, I wouldn't get it (when scientifically, I know Nars is no better than Olay).

But hey, it's our mentality on what items are worth that lets prestige brands get away charging $20+ for a mascara! Or over $100 for a jar of La Mer when Nivea works just as well.
